More about this title
About the Composer: Neal Schon
Neal Schon formed Journey in 1973 as the band evolved from Santana's touring lineup, becoming the primary architect of their sound and primary guitarist throughout their most commercially successful era. His instantly recognizable tone and economical phrasing defined arena rock in the 1980s, combining blues-based soloing with pop sensibility in ways that influenced generations of rock guitarists.
Why we love this
These transcriptions capture some of the most signature guitar work in rock history, and Schon's playing rewards close study. Every song here teaches something different: rhythmic drive, melodic soloing, texture layering, and the interplay between verse and chorus arrangements that made Journey radio staples.
What to expect
Energetic, radio-friendly, and surprisingly layered. These songs live in a sweet spot between accessibility and musicianship, with melodies that stick in your head and arrangements that reveal new details with each listen. There's a confidence in Schon's playing that makes even the simplest passages feel earned.
Who it's for
Intermediate to advanced guitarists ready to tackle transcriptions that balance technical accuracy with stylistic authenticity. This book works for players who want to understand how successful rock songs are structured and executed at a professional level, or who simply want to learn Journey's catalog accurately.
How to get the most out of it
- Pay attention to Schon's use of space and restraint in the verses; the impact of the chorus solo comes from what he doesn't play earlier.
- Lock the rhythmic feel with a metronome, especially in songs like 'Don't Stop Believin'' where the groove sits slightly behind the beat.
- Use the recorded versions as your reference for tone; Schon's use of chorus and slight gain staging creates the signature width you'll want to approximate.
- Study how Schon transitions between rhythm and lead parts in multi-section songs; the hand positioning and tone shifts are as important as the notes themselves.
How to use it
Solo guitarists can build a set of recognizable rock classics for recitals or open mics; the mix of upbeat rockers and power ballads offers programming variety. For ensemble contexts, several of these arrangements translate well to band settings and provide intermediate players with culturally relevant material to work toward.
Skills your students will build
- Reading and executing chord-melody arrangements
- Recognizing and playing standard rock rhythm patterns and variations
- Understanding melodic phrasing in lead guitar contexts
- Interpreting dynamics and tone production from transcribed cues
- Translating recorded solos into TAB notation and performance decisions
