Description
Francisco Correa de Arauxo (1584—1654) was a key figure in helping transition Baroque techniques into Spanish composition. Regarded as the finest Spanish organist of his generation, his works were regrettably long neglected, despite constituting a peak of organ literature in Spain and an exceptional bridge between the Renaissance and the Baroque, although interest continues to grow. His compositions, 69 works all for organ and progressively more difficult to suggest a pedagogical purpose, were published in 1626 in a single volume under the title Libro de tientos y discursos de música practica, y theorica de organo, intitulado Facultad organica. This edition, transcribed and edited by Santiago Kastner, has been released in eight volumes.

More about this title

About the Composer: Francisco Correa de Arauxo

Francisco Correa de Arauxo (1584–1654) stands as one of the most accomplished Spanish organists of the Baroque era and a composer of profound historical importance. His keyboard works demonstrate a mastery of both polyphonic writing and the technical possibilities of the organ, bridging the sophisticated counterpoint of the Renaissance with the emerging harmonic language of the Baroque. Though his reputation declined after the 17th century, modern scholarship has restored recognition of his achievement as a decisive figure in Spanish musical development.

Correa de Arauxo published his complete organ works in 1626 as the Libro de tientos y discursos de música pratica, y theorica de organo, intitulado Facultad organica. This extraordinary collection of 69 compositions arranged in progressive difficulty reveals his pedagogical ambitions alongside his artistic vision. His writing influenced Spanish organ music for generations and remains central to understanding how Renaissance polyphonic traditions transformed into Baroque idioms.

Why we love this

Santiago Kastner's scholarly edition preserves one of the most significant organ collections in the Western canon while making it accessible across eight manageable volumes. Organists at intermediate to advanced levels find in this music an inexhaustible wellspring of contrapuntal challenge and stylistic growth. The progressive structure Correa de Arauxo embedded in his original publication means you can guide students through increasing complexity while building technical command and musical independence.

What to expect

Correa de Arauxo's tientos unfold with architectural inevitability, their intricate voice-leading creating a sense of formal inevitability within seemingly free counterpoint. The music inhabits a liminal space between Renaissance clarity and Baroque emotional expression, balancing mathematical precision with moments of surprising harmonic color and registral drama. Each piece rewards close listening and repeated engagement, revealing new contrapuntal relationships and interpretive possibilities with each encounter.

Who it's for

Advanced organists seeking challenging repertoire that combines intellectual rigor with musical substance will find in this volume material worthy of sustained study and performance. Studio teachers guiding advanced students toward concert programming and independent musical thought can draw on Correa de Arauxo's progressively structured works to deepen contrapuntal facility and interpretive maturity. College and university organ programs use this edition as core repertoire for recitals and as foundational study in historical keyboard technique.

How to get the most out of it

  • Approach the articulation with clarity suited to the acoustic of your instrument; Correa de Arauxo's contrapuntal lines demand distinct voice separation, and how you voice the manual transitions will shape the listener's perception of each melodic strand.
  • Study the original registration suggestions and annotations that Kastner provides; understanding the composer's intended tonal palette transforms the harmonic color and architectural balance of each piece.
  • Practice the pedal passages separately to ensure independence from the manual lines; the interaction between foot and hands requires deliberate attention and consistent rhythmic control.
  • Shape phrases around harmonic arrivals rather than metrical downbeats; Baroque organ writing often places dramatic harmonic events away from downbeats, and sensitivity to this phrasing enriches the musical narrative.

How to use it

Program selections from this volume on recitals featuring Spanish or Iberian organ repertoire, where Correa de Arauxo's work anchors both historical context and artistic substance. Use individual tientos as pedagogical touchstones within a year-long advanced studio curriculum, assigning volumes progressively to match student development. In academic settings, pair these works with related Baroque organ literature to illustrate regional variation and compositional approach within the era.
