About the Composer: Russell Robinson

Russell Robinson

Russell Robinson's career spans five decades of conducting, composing, and music education leadership across six continents. He served as Emeritus Professor of Music Education at the University of Florida and held roles including Associate Dean of the UF College of the Arts and National Collegiate Chair for the National Association for Music Education. His conducting appearances at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the White House, combined with his work at festivals and conferences worldwide, have established him as a prominent voice in choral music education.

Robinson's prolific output includes over 500 publications in print: choral compositions, arrangements, instructional articles, books, and DVDs. He was inducted into the Florida Music Educators Association Hall of Fame in 2016 and served as FMEA President. His compositional voice reflects a deep understanding of what works in the rehearsal room and on the concert stage.

Why we love this

This piece captures what makes a concert memorable without demanding excessive rehearsal time. Robinson's text setting is singerly and his harmonic language sits comfortably in the voices, letting the joy in the title come through naturally rather than requiring heroic efforts from your singers.

What to expect

The title signals the musical character directly: this is music that invites singers and listeners into genuine musical celebration. The writing is transparent and singable, with straightforward voicing that emphasizes clarity of text and harmonic color rather than complexity.

Who it's for

Grade 3 choirs ready to program a work that audiences genuinely enjoy without sacrificing musical substance. This octavo suits choirs preparing for festival appearances or needing a reliable concert piece that demonstrates solid musicianship and ensemble unity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Approach the optional accompaniment as a way to support ensemble confidence during early rehearsals, then consider performing at least one verse unaccompanied to showcase your choir's blend and intonation.
  • Shape the text with forward motion and clear vowel unification across all four voices; this piece gains its warmth from consistent tone quality rather than dynamic extremes.
  • Allow the optional accompaniment to breathe where it naturally supports harmonic transitions; the piece works equally well with or without it, so make your choice based on your rehearsal priorities.

How to use it

This pairs well as a concert opener or closer that establishes a bright, welcoming tone without requiring extensive setup or explanation. Its moderate difficulty and optional accompaniment make it a sensible choice for festival scheduling, where you need reliable material that performs confidently regardless of performance conditions.

Skills your students will build

  • Clear diction and unified vowel formation across four-part writing
  • Sustaining phrases with forward melodic direction in ensemble voicing
  • Balancing SATB textures with optional keyboard support
  • Performing concert repertoire that accommodates optional accompaniment
