Gayle Kowalchyk

Gayle Kowalchyk has shaped piano pedagogy for decades as both an educator and prolific educational composer. She holds degrees in piano performance and pedagogy from Ohio University and Northwestern University, and earned her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her teaching career spans California State University, Northridge, where she instructs class piano and piano pedagogy, as well as earlier positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She was a summer faculty member at the National Music Camp in Interlochen during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Kowalchyk's reach extends far beyond the studio and classroom. A sought-after clinician and adjudicator, she has presented at national conventions of MTNA and MENC, the National Group Piano Symposium, the National Piano Teachers Institute, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. Alongside her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, she has authored over 300 educational piano books, including the widely adopted Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts series. Her dual role as university educator and creative pedagogical writer makes her work central to how early elementary students first encounter music at the keyboard.
