More about this title

About the Composer: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray has directed the choir program at Rosemead High School in California since 2004, where she also teaches piano. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, along with a California Single Subject Music Credential from Cal State Northridge.

With over 100 published choral compositions to her name, Gray has established herself as a prolific voice in contemporary choral writing. Beyond her work in composition and education, she performs regularly and finds creative renewal through travel, swimming, reading, and cycling.

Why we love this

Gray writes patriotic music that feels genuinely celebratory without veering into bombast or oversimplification. The combination of singable writing and recorded accompaniment makes this an ideal choice for programs that need accessible yet dignified 4th of July programming.

What to expect

Straightforward and uplifting, with the kind of accessibility that lets singers focus on genuine expression rather than technical survival. The piece carries authentic patriotic sentiment without cynicism or oversentimentality.

Who it's for

High school and upper middle school choirs looking for repertoire that celebrates American patriotism with musical substance. Singers at this level can handle the harmonic and textural demands while gaining confidence through a fully realized accompaniment.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the text clarity with the harmonic movement; the accompaniment track gives you freedom to shape phrasing without worrying about keeping strict tempo, so use that flexibility to let words land with intention.
  • Layer your voices gradually if the piece builds; the digital accompaniment provides a steady foundation, so you can afford to add voices and dynamic layers across the piece.
  • Listen to the recorded accompaniment in rehearsal before your first run-through so singers hear the harmonic context and any accompanying melodic lines that support their parts.

How to use it

Use this as your centerpiece for a summer concert or 4th of July celebration, where it can anchor a program of American repertoire. Its recorded accompaniment makes it practical for outdoor concerts or events where instrumental accompaniment logistics are challenging.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with recorded accompaniment and maintaining ensemble blend across dynamic changes
  • Lyrical phrasing in patriotic repertoire while maintaining text clarity
  • Balancing individual part security with full harmonic awareness
