More about this title

About the Author: Eric Branner

Eric Branner

Eric Branner comes from a lineage of music teachers and has built his career bridging two worlds: the classroom and the business side of music education. As VP of Business Development for Private Markets at MakeMusic and founder of MakeMusic Studio, he's spent years helping independent teachers streamline their operations. He's also a working musician, a classical guitarist and owner of Blackforrest Music School, which means his advice comes from lived experience, not theory.

Beyond his own studio, Eric has taught at Seattle Pacific University and Holy Names Academy, and he's been deeply involved in Seattle's arts community through roles with Seattle Repertory Theatre, Seattle Opera, Seattle Symphony, and Seattle Children's Theatre. As a past president of the Seattle chapter of MTNA, he's committed to elevating the profession itself. His mission is straightforward: equip music teachers with the business literacy they need to thrive.

Why we love this

This book speaks directly to the business realities that independent music teachers face but rarely discuss openly. Rather than treating studio management as secondary to teaching, Branner positions it as essential to longevity and impact, offering concrete strategies on pricing, systems, and professional mindset that teachers can implement immediately.

Who it's for

Independent music teachers who are serious about sustainability, whether you're just starting a studio or trying to grow the one you have. This is also valuable for music school administrators, program directors, and anyone running a teaching business who wants practical strategies grounded in real experience rather than generic business advice.

How to use it

Use this as a professional development resource for your teaching staff or studio colleagues. Many directors find it helpful to discuss a chapter at a time during faculty meetings or use it as a foundation for conversations about how to build more sustainable teaching careers within your organization.

Skills your students will build

  • Setting rates and pricing strategies aligned with market conditions and experience level
