More about this title

About the Composer: Jack Wilds

Jack Wilds

Jack Wilds composes across ensembles of all ages and scales, from children's choirs to professional orchestras. His chamber works have premiered with the Attacca Quartet, members of the New York Philharmonic and Atlanta Symphony, and ensembles throughout Asia and Europe. Drawing inspiration from visual art, philosophy, poetry, and absolute music, he writes with intention to meet musicians at their current level while pushing toward genuine artistry.

A former public school band director, Wilds has published over 40 works for developing wind and choral musicians. His compositions appear regularly on festival required repertoire lists across multiple continents and have been heard at the Midwest Clinic and major educator conferences. He teaches composition, music theory, ear training, and music technology at Texas State University and serves as Co-Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in San Marcos, while maintaining active clinical and adjudication schedules nationwide.

Why we love this

Wilds has written a fanfare that actually works as an opener at this level. The three-note motif creates immediate cohesion without feeling repetitive, and the modern harmonies give your band a contemporary sound that still sits comfortably under developing hands. This is the kind of piece that energizes an audience and your students simultaneously.

What to expect

Bold and propulsive, with an infectious energy that carries you forward. The spare three-note motif anchors everything, while modern harmonies create a sleek, current sound that feels both accessible and sophisticated.

Who it's for

Grade 2.5 concert bands looking for an opener with genuine personality and contemporary flavor. Directors programming festivals or contests will find a piece that sounds ambitious and polished without overextending developing musicians.

How to get the most out of it

  • Emphasize the three-note figure wherever it appears; it's the connective tissue of the entire work, and clarity here makes the faster melodic passages more impactful.
  • Keep the overall tempo steady and driving. The energy comes from relentless forward motion, not rushing individual phrases.
  • Balance the modern harmonic language carefully so it reads as fresh rather than muddy. Ensure inner voices articulate cleanly.

How to use it

Open your next concert with this. It sets an energetic, confident tone without exhausting your ensemble, and leaves room for contrasting repertoire to follow. It also works well in a festival or contest rotation where you want to make an immediate impression.

Skills your students will build

  • Executing a rhythmic motif with consistent articulation and attack across the ensemble
  • Balancing part independence within modern harmonic textures
  • Maintaining tempo stability through repetitive material and varied melodic passages
  • Shaping fast-paced musical ideas while keeping overall energy cohesive
