About the Composer: Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages has established himself as a versatile composer and conductor whose work reaches across orchestral, band, and chamber music contexts. His compositions have been heard in world-class venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Sydney Opera House, performed by ensembles ranging from professional orchestras to school bands. He holds membership in the American Bandmasters Association and received the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association.

Balmages brings significant recognition to his field through major competitions and commissions. He won the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest with Love and Light, received the inaugural James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Visual and Performing Arts, and was commissioned by the University of Miami to compose for the presidential inauguration. His music appeared in the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service, and he conducts regularly at all-state ensembles, university groups, and international conferences. Currently, he serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic.
