About the Composer: Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages has built an international reputation as a composer and conductor whose work moves fluidly across orchestral, band, and chamber idioms. His compositions appear regularly on stages ranging from Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center to the Sydney Opera House, performed by ensembles from professional orchestras to elementary school bands. He holds membership in the American Bandmasters Association and received the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association; his composition Love and Light won the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest.

Balmages has conducted guest appearances at major venues and conferences worldwide, including the Midwest Clinic, Western International Band Clinic, and the College Band Directors Conference. He received the inaugural Distinguished Alumni Award from James Madison University's School of Visual and Performing Arts and was later commissioned by the University of Miami to compose music for the presidential inauguration of Dr. Julio Frenk. His music was performed as part of the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service attended by President Obama and Vice President Biden. Currently, he serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic.
