Kathy Holmes came to composing and formal music study later in her life than many musicians. After earning a degree in Early Childhood Education and raising three children, she pursued a Bachelor's degree in Music from Hiram College in Ohio while in her forties. Her path into music education was shaped by family legacy; both her grandmother and aunt were piano teachers, though Holmes established her own teaching practice in the greater Cleveland area.

Holmes remains deeply connected to The Western Reserve Piano Teachers, a professional community in northeast Ohio where she continues to develop her craft as both a composer and educator. Her work reflects her direct experience in the studio: she writes for the students she teaches, with an intuitive grasp of what engages young learners and what challenges them appropriately at each level.
