Description
LA FAVORITA (THE FAVORITE) is an opera in four acts by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848). The libretto by Alphonse Royer and Gustave Vaëz is based on the play LE COMTE DE COMMINGES by François-Thomas-Marie de Baculard d'Arnaud. On the brink of taking his monastic vows, the young novice Fernand declares that he has fallen in love with a lady whose identity remains unrevealed to him. He discovers her to be Léonor, the mistress of Alfonso XI, the King of Castile. Receiving an army commission from her, he earns a prize from the king himself for his success on the battlefield. When he announces his wish to marry Léonor, further revelations lead to her arrest. He decides to return to monastic life, but her exhausted appearance persuades him to declare his love for her again before she dies in his arms. The opera premiered at the Salle Le Peletier in Paris on December 2, 1840. In the Act 3 aria O MIO FERNANDO, Léonor sings of both her desire to marry Fernando and the fear of bringing him dishonor. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Hp: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set): Solo Sop.

More about this title

About the Composer: Gaetano Donizetti

Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) composed more than 60 operas during his lifetime, establishing himself as one of the most prolific and versatile opera composers of the 19th century. His gift for vocal writing and dramatic pacing made him a contemporary rival to Rossini and a direct predecessor to Verdi, and his works remain central to the operatic repertoire.

Donizetti's strength lay in his ability to craft soaring melodic lines that sit naturally for the voice while maintaining harmonic sophistication and orchestral color. He worked across comic, serious, and semiseria genres with equal facility, and his operas continue to reward singers and conductors who understand both the technical demands and the emotional generosity of his writing.

Why we love this

This aria gives you a soprano soloist who gets to sing one of the great Donizetti lines: soaring, strategically placed, and emotionally direct. The orchestration is transparent enough to support a clear voice without burying the drama, yet rich enough that the orchestra becomes a genuine dramatic partner. Programming this piece signals serious vocal artistry and offers your orchestra a chance to accompany, not just provide background.

What to expect

The aria radiates the tension between longing and dread. Donizetti gives you soaring, almost luminous melody that speaks to Léonor's deep feeling for Fernando, then darkens it with harmonic coloration and orchestral shifts that mirror her awareness of the danger she brings him. The vocal line flows with an almost unbearable beauty, held in place by an orchestra that is both supportive and dramatically ominous.

Who it's for

This conductor score is for orchestras and opera companies preparing a soprano soloist for one of Donizetti's signature arias. It suits experienced ensembles and singers who have the vocal technique and interpretive maturity to sustain the long, exposed lines that define this piece.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the soprano voice against the full orchestra by rehearsing the accompaniment at dynamic levels that leave headroom for the singer. Donizetti's orchestration doesn't require the full ensemble to play at volume to be effective.
  • Mark the conductor score carefully for phrase shapes and breathing. The soprano will need clear, predictable beatwork through the longer melodic spans, especially in passages that extend across multiple measures.
  • Maintain consistent forward motion in the ensemble parts. Even at moderate tempos, Donizetti's accompanying figures can drag if players don't feel the underlying pulse clearly.
  • Coordinate the harp (when used) with the string section to create a unified harmonic foundation rather than letting either element dominate the texture.

How to use it

Feature this as a standalone aria concert number or as part of a broader Donizetti program exploring his serious operas. It pairs well with other early 19th-century Italian opera excerpts and works as a centerpiece for a concert that spotlights soprano repertoire from the bel canto era.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining long, florid melodic lines at moderate dynamic levels
  • Supporting a solo voice with transparent but coordinated orchestration
  • Reading conductor scores aligned with operatic vocal phrasing
  • Balancing Donizetti's characteristic fast harmonic movement with emotional clarity
