More about this title

About the Composer: Jack Zaino

Jack Zaino

Jack Zaino brings classroom experience and artistic vision to his work as a choral composer and editor at Alfred Music. His background spans middle school teaching in Connecticut public schools, graduate study in curriculum and instruction at the University of Connecticut, and formal voice training. He remains active in the Connecticut choral community as a performer and clinician, serving on the composition and repertoire committees for both Connecticut ACDA and Consonare Choral Community.

Zaino's arrangement portfolio reflects his commitment to finding legitimate artistry in contemporary music, drawing from artists across genres including Kacey Musgraves, Dan + Shay, and Lizzo. His contributions to choral music earned him Connecticut ACDA's Young Choral Director of the Year award in 2020, recognizing both his compositional work and his efforts to build singing communities.

Why we love this

Zaino approaches sacred music with the same care he brings to contemporary settings, creating settings that feel genuine rather than compromised. The recorded accompaniment gives you flexibility in rehearsal and performance, whether you're building vocal independence or seeking a fuller sound for a concert setting.

What to expect

This Kyrie combines accessibility with genuine musical substance. The writing respects the liturgical weight of the text while remaining vocally grateful and expressive.

Who it's for

Directors working with high school or advanced middle school choirs who want a sacred piece suitable for both concert programs and festival competition. This setting serves ensembles seeking repertoire that honors the text without requiring extensive rehearsal time.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the accompaniment level to support without overwhelming the choir; use the track as a learning tool early on, then gradually reduce dependence as ensemble confidence grows
  • Shape phrases with attention to the text's spiritual weight; avoid rushing through what might naturally call for breath and reflection
  • Check intonation in context with the recorded accompaniment during rehearsals to catch any tuning issues that the piano might mask

How to use it

Include this as part of a sacred or liturgical concert program, or program it alongside contrasting sacred works from different periods to build a thematic set. Its festival-appropriate length and moderate difficulty make it an ideal choice for spring competition schedules.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sacred text with appropriate phrasing and expression
  • Blending voices within a clear harmonic framework
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment while maintaining independent part security
  • Understanding liturgical context and musical function of the Kyrie
