About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped elementary and choral music education for over three decades, serving as Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications at major educational music publishers including Alfred Music. A prolific composer and clinician, she has authored more than 600 choral works and 75 full-length songbooks and musicals that remain in active circulation. Her conducting credits span prestigious venues from Lincoln Center to Carnegie Hall to The Kennedy Center, where she has led honor choirs and festival ensembles nationwide.

Albrecht holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976), the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1977; M.M. in Accompanying, 1979), and has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. She is a consistent recipient of the ASCAP Special Music Award since 1987 and was recognized with the Distinguished Alumna Award from both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College in 2021. She collaborates with her husband, composer and arranger Jay Althouse, and resides in Wake Forest, North Carolina.

Why we love this

Albrecht and Althouse understand what makes elementary students engage with music: irresistible rhythms and the freedom to move. This collection captures dance styles from tango to twist in arrangements that work equally well as a casual songbook or as a performance program, giving you flexibility for everything from a Friday afternoon movement break to a concert-ready 30-minute show. The included movement suggestions and reproducible format mean you're not managing complex staging or hunting for additional resources.

What to expect

Infectious and celebratory. These songs practically demand motion; students feel the pulse immediately and respond with visible delight. There's a lightness and playfulness to the arrangements that honors both the music and the age group, creating moments where learning feels indistinguishable from fun.

Who it's for

Teachers in grades K through 5 who want to activate their general music classes or choirs with contemporary, high-energy repertoire. This collection works for mixed-age elementary ensembles, classroom singing programs, or small group performances where movement and joy matter as much as vocal precision.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the recorded accompaniment to establish the groove in rehearsal, then gradually shift students toward independence so the singing remains the focus rather than the track.
  • Teach the movement vocabulary first without the singing so students internalize the steps and can perform them with confidence and precision.
  • Encourage students to feel the rhythm in their whole bodies; even minimal movement (swaying, stepping, shoulder isolation) transforms the energy from static singing to genuine performance.
  • Select 4-6 songs for your program rather than attempting all of them; this creates a tighter, higher-energy show that holds audience attention.

How to use it

Program this as your spring or end-of-year concert finale to send families home with energy and smiles. You can also weave individual songs throughout the year as brain breaks or transitions between more traditional repertoire, or extract 4-6 pieces for a focused movement showcase at an assembly or special event.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision across multiple styles (tango, twist, contemporary grooves)
  • Physical coordination between singing and intentional movement
  • Ensemble awareness while performing choreography
  • Musical phrasing and breath control in upbeat, dance-oriented contexts
  • Confidence and joy in public performance
