About the Arranger: Wendell Whalum

Wendell P. Whalum earned international distinction across multiple musical disciplines: as a conductor, organist, musicologist, and arranger whose work shaped choral music education. He studied at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia (BA, 1952) and later at the University of Iowa (MA, 1965), receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Haiti in 1968.

Whalum joined the Morehouse College faculty in 1953 and served as Director of the Morehouse College Glee Club, a position from which he influenced generations of singers and conductors. His memberships in the American Guild of Organists, Music Educators National Conference, and other scholarly organizations reflected his deep engagement with musical practice and pedagogy. His arrangements and compositions, rooted in the African American choral tradition, remain central to sacred choral repertoire.
