About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck leads choral publications at Alfred Music and has created more than 450 choral compositions, arrangements, and children's musicals that appear in classrooms and concert halls worldwide. His pedagogical resources include Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique. A trained tenor with degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, Beck regularly guests as a conductor, choreographer, adjudicator, and clinician across the United States and internationally.

Beyond his publishing work, Beck is an active performer and director in musical theatre, serves as a chamber singer with the North Carolina Master Chorale, and has been a session vocalist for Alfred Music since 1992. His commissions and guest conducting appearances include honor choirs and all-state ensembles throughout the Southeast, reflecting his deep investment in both student artistry and music literacy.

Why we love this

This collection delivers six strong arrangements from trusted choral composers, each tested in real rehearsal rooms and staged successfully by countless directors. The mix of familiar holiday material keeps singers engaged while the movement and staging options transform a simple concert into genuine entertainment. A ready-made digital package eliminates the barrier between choosing a Christmas show and actually producing one.

What to expect

Festive, accessible, and genuine. These arrangements honor the holiday spirit while keeping the focus on singers who are learning to enjoy ensemble work and stage presence. The music feels contemporary enough to hold student interest, but firmly grounded in recognizable material that families recognize and enjoy.

Who it's for

Directors of middle school and high school choirs who want a Christmas show with instant credibility and minimal preparation time. This works equally well for community choirs, church music programs, and school ensembles seeking a polished winter concert that includes movement and personality without requiring complex technical staging.

How to get the most out of it

  • Build staging gradually during rehearsal rather than blocking everything at once; let choreography develop alongside vocal precision so neither feels secondary
  • Recorded accompaniments keep tempos consistent across multiple performances and reduce pressure on your accompanist during the show itself
  • Encourage singers to commit fully to the character and movement of each number; the fun comes from permission to be playful and confident, not polished
  • Use ensemble rehearsals early to nail unison sections, then branch into sections once singers know what they're aiming for vocally

How to use it

Program this as a full concert unto itself (each arrangement is designed for that context) or extract individual numbers for a longer winter concert that includes other repertoire. The digital format makes it ideal for programs scheduled close to the holiday, since rehearsal materials are available immediately without waiting for physical scores to arrive.

Skills your students will build

  • Coordinating melody and movement in ensemble settings
  • Responding to tempo and cues from a recorded accompaniment
  • Building ensemble blend within mixed voice textures
  • Interpreting seasonal material across contemporary and traditional styles
