More about this title

About the Composer: Judith Bingham

Judith Bingham is a British composer known for her distinctive approach to sacred and liturgical music, drawing on both contemporary harmonic language and traditional musical forms. Her works frequently engage with plainchant and ecclesiastical contexts, exploring the intersection of meditative spirituality and structural innovation. Bingham's compositions for organ and voice have established her as a significant voice in contemporary church music.

Why we love this

Kalmar Rising offers organists a substantial contemporary work that honors liturgical tradition while demanding real musical and technical sophistication. The optional integration of handbells and sopranos creates flexible performance possibilities without requiring either element, so you can shape the piece to your specific resources and acoustic context.

What to expect

Kalmar Rising unfolds with contemplative depth, rooted in the modal language of plainchant yet constructed with contemporary harmonic sophistication. The piece breathes with liturgical solemnity while exploring the organ's capacity for both transparency and architectural grandeur across its quarter-hour span.

Who it's for

Organists seeking substantial contemporary repertoire that extends beyond standard liturgical settings, particularly those working in cathedral or concert hall contexts. This work rewards players comfortable with modern harmonic language and comfortable managing optional ensemble parts within a solo framework.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the layered textures carefully across the manuals; the optional plainsong from sopranos should complement rather than dominate the organ's primary melodic lines.
  • When including the handbell part, coordinate its struck entrances with the organist well in advance so the single performer can manage both the keyboard and anticipate the bell's resonance.
  • Explore the full range of the organ's registration throughout the 16-minute arc to shape structural movement and maintain listener engagement across the extended duration.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece in an all-organ recital or as part of a mixed concert featuring sacred music. Its 16-minute length and contemplative character make it an ideal second-half opener, or position it as the climactic work in a concert exploring the relationship between traditional and contemporary liturgical music.

Skills your students will build

  • Managing sustained harmonic density and modal structures
  • Coordinating multi-manual registration changes within extended forms
  • Balancing optional ensemble parts while maintaining organ primacy
  • Interpreting contemporary notation and extended organ techniques
  • Shaping architectural form across an extended single-movement work
