More about this title

About the Composer: June C. Montgomery

June C. Montgomery

June C. Montgomery earned her degree from Florida State University and has spent more than two decades teaching private piano while also serving six years as an elementary school music instructor. Her work in schools earned her recognition as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America and membership in Delta Kappa Gamma.

Beyond the studio and classroom, Montgomery has authored and co-authored numerous instructional series for Alfred Publishing, including FUNdamental Musicianship Skills, Piano Camp, and collaborations on Musical Concepts and Meet the Great Composers. She has presented clinics at state and national conventions, including the Music Teachers National Association, and brings her practical teaching experience to every piece she composes. Her long tenure as carillonneur at the Stephen Foster Memorial and her work directing children's choirs reflect her commitment to engaging young musicians across multiple musical traditions.

Why we love this

Montgomery writes for early intermediate pianists with genuine understanding of what works at this level. The piece delivers real musical satisfaction without gratuitous technical demands, making it equally effective as an encore, a cheerful program opener, or a confidence builder for students still solidifying their fundamentals.

What to expect

Jump for Joy lives up to its title with an energetic, uplifting character that never feels heavy or overly sentimental. The piece has a natural bounce and forward momentum that engages both player and listener.

Who it's for

This is ideal for early intermediate pianists preparing for recitals, contests, or community performances. The 4-page length and accessible writing make it suitable for students roughly 2-3 years into lessons.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a steady, buoyant tempo from the start. Montgomery's title suggests character, so commit to a joyful pace without rushing through the phrases.
  • Pay attention to dynamic shaping within each phrase rather than playing at one static level. Small crescendos and diminuendos reveal the melody's contour.
  • Balance hand parts clearly. The supporting hand must remain light enough that the melody always sits on top and is easily heard.
  • Mark your fingerings on the first read-through and stick to them. Consistent fingering at this level prevents hesitation in performance.

How to use it

Program this as a spirited contrast to a slower, more lyrical piece, or as a standalone encore that leaves audiences smiling. It works equally well on a student recital or as part of a larger student showcase where upbeat repertoire keeps the energy moving.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining even tempo through rhythmic variety
  • Shaping melodic phrases with dynamic contrast
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment in both hands
  • Executing quick hand position shifts at tempo
  • Interpreting stylistic intent from a piece title
