About the Composer: William Owens

William Owens brings three decades of classroom experience to his compositions for young ensembles. A 1985 graduate of VanderCook College of Music, he has emerged as a defining voice in accessible band writing, with over 300 published works for concert band, string orchestra, and small ensembles performed across North America and internationally. His music appears on festival required lists and in educational curricula, cementing his reputation as a practical composer who understands what young musicians can achieve.

Beyond the page, Owens has served as a clinician and conductor, shaping the field through his work with student musicians and teachers alike. His compositions have earned commissions from the South Plains College Department of Fine Arts, Phi Beta Mu International, and the American Bandmasters Association, among others. He holds membership in ASCAP and the Texas Music Educators Association, and retired in 2014 after 30 years as a high school band director in Texas. He resides in Fort Worth with his wife, Georgia.
