More about this title

About the Author: John Kinyon

John Kinyon

John Kinyon earned degrees from Ithaca College and the Eastman School of Music, later receiving an honorary doctorate from Limestone College in South Carolina. His career spans instrumental music direction, music education leadership at the university level (including a faculty position at the University of Miami), and educational music publishing work for major houses.

Kinyon has composed more than 250 educational pieces for Alfred Publishing, working across Grade 1-3 difficulty levels in multiple styles. His output includes original marches, ballads, and overtures designed specifically for student musicians and ensemble training.

Why we love this

Kinyon's method adapts seamlessly across solo study, section rehearsal, and full band settings without losing pedagogical coherence. The flexibility to teach one student or an entire flute section from the same book eliminates the need for separate materials while maintaining clear progression and musical engagement.

What to expect

Straightforward and encouraging. The writing balances practical technical drills with genuine melodies that reward accurate practice, giving students tangible progress and musical satisfaction rather than endless finger exercises.

Who it's for

Beginning flute players working one-on-one with a teacher, members of a beginning band program, or students in mixed-instrument classes. This book serves equally well for private studio instruction and classroom ensemble settings.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through the initial exercises slowly to establish consistent embouchure and air support; rushing these foundational pages will create problems later
  • Use the recorded accompaniments (sold separately) once students have internalized note names and basic fingerings to add musical context and ensemble awareness
  • Coordinate with other section books so your flutes progress in tandem with clarinets and other woodwinds, keeping the full band's learning curve aligned

How to use it

Pair this with the corresponding books for clarinet, trumpet, and other instruments to build a coordinated first-year band curriculum. The consistent pedagogical approach across the series allows students to move at the same pace regardless of their primary instrument.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading treble clef on the staff
  • Proper embouchure formation and breath control
  • Fingering accuracy and hand position
  • Rhythm reading in simple meters
  • Playing in tune with consistent tone quality
  • Responding to dynamic and tempo markings
