Description
Jazz Conception is a new and exciting way for players at all levels to learn the language of jazz! Each book features 21 solo etudes based on chord changes to standards and blues.
The same 21 etudes transposed and adapted for the main jazz instruments.
Play along with one of today's finest, swinging New York rhythm sections: Mike LeDonne on piano, Dennis Irwin on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums.
Start out fairly easy, then get progressively more difficult.
Use the etudes as a bridge to solos of the masters that are usually more complicated and involved.
Learn melodies and lines that will give you a solid jazz vocabulary and musicality.
Use the book/audio downloads sets for private lessons, for self-study, or in any combination up to a full jazz ensemble, including flute and clarinet.
If you are more advanced you may want to use the book to develop your sight reading abilities, for transcribing the etudes off the audio downloads (then check against the book) or for just having fun playing along with a great jazz rhythm section.
Use as an improvisation study, learning how to construct a swinging, logical solo - works especially well in combination with the Study Guide.
The Jazz Conception Series is also perfectly suited for the class room. It can be used to develop younger students jazz style in a big band or small group. In an improvisation class the teacher can use the etudes as studies in improvisation. The Study Guide provides an analysis of each etude, along with practice assignments for each etude.

More about this title

About the Author: Jim Snidero

Jim Snidero

Jim Snidero has spent more than three decades establishing himself as a leading voice in contemporary jazz. A saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator, he has earned recognition from Downbeat Magazine as both a "master musician" and "alto saxophone virtuoso," and secured a place in the 2017 Downbeat Critic's Poll. His influence on the international jazz scene remains substantial and ongoing.

Snidero's path to prominence began in his native Camp Springs, Maryland, where early mentorship from Phil Woods and studies at the University of North Texas' renowned jazz program shaped his developing artistry. After relocating to New York in 1981, he quickly gained visibility through work with Brother Jack McDuff, followed by distinguished sideman roles with the Mingus Big Band, Frank Wess, the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra, and others. His extensive discography as a leader, beginning with On Time (1984) and continuing through acclaimed releases like Mixed Bag and Blue Afternoon, demonstrates a career built on musical consistency and stylistic range.

Why we love this

Snidero's sequencing of etudes feels genuinely pedagogical rather than arbitrary. They build logically from accessible to challenging while staying rooted in real jazz vocabulary, giving your students a functional bridge to authentic repertoire without oversimplifying the language. The rhythm section is exceptional, LeDonne, Irwin, and Washington swing with the kind of ease that makes young musicians want to match their musicality.

What to expect

Engaging and immediately grounded in real jazz idiom. The etudes sit comfortably under the fingers while the harmonic language keeps you alert. Playing along with the rhythm section creates momentum and genuine musicality rather than mechanical drill.

Who it's for

Intermediate to advanced clarinet players serious about developing jazz fluency. This works equally well for self-directed learners, students in private lessons, and ensemble players preparing for improvisational contexts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with transcription work on the recorded versions before consulting the printed music. Your ear develops faster when you're chasing actual jazz phrasing rather than reading straight from the page.
  • Lock into the rhythm section's time feel rather than rushing ahead. These etudes reward patience and listening as much as technical facility.
  • Work through the Study Guide's analysis of each etude before attempting the solo section. Understanding the harmonic logic makes improvisation feel less random and more intentional.
  • Record yourself playing over the accompaniments, then listen back without the written etude in front of you. This reveals what you actually internalized versus what you're reading.

How to use it

Assign individual etudes as weekly practice assignments for students in jazz ensemble or improvisation classes. The escalating difficulty lets you customize pace for different players within the same ensemble. Combine with the optional Study Guide to deepen harmonic understanding across your jazz curriculum.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading jazz chord changes and understanding their harmonic function
  • Translating harmonic information into melodic and improvisational choices
  • Swing articulation and phrasing appropriate to different jazz styles
  • Navigating blues forms and standard jazz turnarounds
  • Developing consistent time feel and rhythmic accuracy with a rhythm section
  • Building a vocabulary of characteristic jazz melodic figures and motifs
