About the Arranger: Andy Beck

Andy Beck serves as Director of Choral Publications at Alfred Music and brings decades of experience in choral writing and music education. His catalog includes more than 450 published choral works, vocal resources, and children's musicals, alongside foundational sight-singing and vocal technique resources widely used in classrooms and rehearsal halls. A trained tenor and musician since his studies at Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, Beck remains actively involved in conducting, adjudicating, and guest teaching across the United States.
Beyond publishing, Beck's work spans musical theatre direction, chamber choir singing with the North Carolina Master Chorale, and studio work with Alfred Music dating back to 1992. His arrangements and compositions are performed regularly by singers of all ages around the world, reflecting his deep commitment to accessible, engaging choral literature that serves music education.
Why we love this
This medley packs five beloved carols into a tight, energetic package that works beautifully for groups with limited rehearsal time or mixed vocal maturity. Beck's 2-part voicing stays singable across all ages while keeping each carol recognizable and fresh through thoughtful orchestration that respects the material without overcomplicating it. At just over three minutes, it delivers maximum holiday impact with minimal preparation burden.
What to expect
Bright, uncomplicated joy. The medley approach keeps energy high and prevents any single carol from lingering long enough to feel slow or overly sentimental. This is music that invites singing and leaves audiences smiling.
Who it's for
Choirs of all ages and ability levels benefit from this arrangement, especially conductors looking for accessible holiday repertoire that doesn't sacrifice musicality. It works well for school choirs in elementary through high school settings and community choirs balancing performance goals with limited rehearsal time.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the five carols distinctly so each one registers as its own moment rather than blending into a continuous stream. A slight break between sections helps audiences reset and enjoy the variety.
- Shape the melodic line through each carol with particular attention to phrase contour; carols reward clear storytelling even when they're brief.
- Use the recorded accompaniment to lock the harmonic foundation so singers can focus energy on clear articulation and character shifts between songs.
How to use it
Program this as an opener for a holiday concert to set a celebratory tone, or use it as a brief ensemble moment between longer choral works. It also works effectively as a finale if you want to send audiences out in a spirited mood. For school settings, the straightforward style makes it suitable for winter assemblies or community holiday events where a polished but unpretentious sound fits the occasion.
Skills your students will build
- Singing two-part harmony with secure intonation across multiple hymn-based melodies
- Quick musical transitions between contrasting carols in a single piece
- Projecting clear diction and character in a fast-paced medley structure
- Interpreting familiar material with ensemble cohesion and balanced voicing
