About the Composer: Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips (b. 1953) built his reputation by creating engaging, pedagogically sound string music that works in real classrooms. Over a 27-year tenure directing a 700-student string program in Saline, Michigan, he developed masterful approaches to teaching both classical and eclectic styles, earning national recognition for his innovative methods. His work as a clinician, conductor, and arranger spans everything from youth orchestras to the All-State level, and he has conducted at prestigious venues including Interlochen, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and the Midwest Clinic.

Phillips has authored more than 25 instructional series and published over 200 works for orchestras and bands, including the six levels of Sound Innovations and groundbreaking collections like Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, and Rock Philharmonic. An ASCAP award-winning composer, he founded the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, a folk ensemble that performed internationally and at the White House. His instructional DVDs and compositions continue to reach thousands of string students annually.

Why we love this

Phillips knows exactly what 1.5-grade orchestras can handle: the piece sits in a comfortable technical range while maintaining genuine energy and character. The two polkas flow naturally from accessible arrangements that reward clean bow control and ensemble togetherness, making this an ideal bridge between foundational technique and confident musicality. Directors appreciate that it looks more sophisticated than it plays, giving students a real success experience.

What to expect

Bright, dancing, and buoyant. The polka rhythms create an infectious forward motion that feels joyful without being frantic; students experience the satisfaction of bringing a folk melody to life with real character. The arrangement sparkles when the bowing is clean and the ensemble stays together, giving everyone a chance to feel the music spring off their instruments.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the Grade 1.5 level who are developing basic bowing control and ensemble awareness. This works beautifully for students transitioning from unison or simple two-part writing into richer textures, and it's equally valuable for any string program seeking genuinely fun repertoire that doesn't compromise musicality.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the slurs by drawing the bow with gentle weight and weight release; let the string ring through the first note of each pair rather than bouncing into it.
  • Unify bow speed across the section when the tempo holds steady; use this piece to establish that faster bow speeds create light articulation and slower speeds create weight and presence.
  • Encourage players to listen for the rhythmic pulse of the polka feel; Irish dances thrive when the ensemble locks into a relaxed, dance-like swing rather than a metronomic pulse.
  • Balance the string parts so the melody floats above the supporting voices; lower strings should anchor the harmonic foundation without overwhelming the line.

How to use it

Program this on a spring concert or festival performance where a lighter, audience-pleasing moment will shine. It pairs well with a classical selection and a more substantial contemporary piece, offering variety in mood and style without requiring significant additional rehearsal time. The 2:05 length also makes it ideal for contests or festival competitions where you want impact without eating up too much stage time.

Skills your students will build

  • Slurred articulation with controlled bow weight and direction changes
  • Adjusting bow speed to match dynamic shape within a phrase
  • Listening for rhythmic ensemble precision in dance-like meters
  • Sustaining tone quality through position shifts and string crossings
  • Understanding basic melodic shape and supporting harmonic roles
