More about this title

About the Author: Lois Brownsey

Lois Brownsey

Lois Brownsey began her musical training in Philadelphia, where she studied guitar and became involved in musical theatre while attending Temple University. Her decades-long partnership with Marti Lunn Lantz has produced a catalog of choral works and song collections published by Alfred, including seasonal favorites and culturally diverse compositions. Beyond songwriting, Brownsey has lent her voice and musicianship to commercial jingles for major brands and performed as a bassist and vocalist in rock, pop, and blues ensembles across the United States and internationally.

Brownsey is also an accomplished vocalist and instrumentalist whose live performance career spanned from 1973 to 1997. She has collaborated with other notable composers, including Sally K. Albrecht on holiday choral works. Currently based in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, Brownsey serves as a Celebrant and remains active in her community's artistic and civic life. Together with her husband Kent Heckman, a recording engineer, she operates Red Rock Recording Studios, which has been the production home for numerous Alfred music projects.

Why we love this

This collection transforms history into musical storytelling, giving elementary choirs a complete, performance-ready program that teaches real content while keeping singers engaged. The narrative verses connecting each song create natural dramatic momentum, so your singers aren't just performing unrelated pieces but building a coherent 25-minute journey. The unison and beginning 2-part writing ensures accessibility without sacrificing musical substance or the satisfaction of singing together as an ensemble.

What to expect

Inventions Rock! captures the wonder and ingenuity behind human discovery, with melodies that feel bright, propulsive, and celebratory. Each song carries the personality of its invention, making the program feel like a guided tour through history performed with infectious energy and genuine musical joy.

Who it's for

This collection works beautifully for elementary and middle school choirs seeking a thematic program that combines education with entertainment. Teachers looking to develop singers' ability to hold a line in unison and attempt simple part-singing will find the graduated difficulty accessible for developing voices.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the narrative verses to establish pacing and atmosphere between songs, allowing singers to stay in character and maintain audience focus throughout the full program.
  • Balance vocal blend and projection across the unison sections; encourage singers to listen across the ensemble rather than singing out individually to create unified tone.
  • Layer the 2-part songs gradually into your rehearsal schedule so singers build confidence with unison material first before adding harmonic complexity.
  • Rehearse clear, punchy articulation in the invention-themed songs to match their energetic, celebratory character and keep younger singers engaged.

How to use it

Program this as a complete, standalone concert featuring educational content that families and classmates will find engaging and informative. It also works as an interdisciplinary piece for history or science units, or as a standalone assembly program where the 25-minute structure fits perfectly into school performance windows.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining unison line integrity across phrases
  • Blending voices while carrying melodic weight
  • Reading and performing beginning 2-part harmony
  • Connecting narrative text to musical storytelling
  • Sustaining energy and character over an extended program
