About the Arranger: Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist began playing piano by ear at age four in northwestern Pennsylvania and pursued formal training at the Warren Conservatory of Music before earning her B.S. in Music Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia. Her early career included teaching vocal music in upstate New York and instructing for the international Yamaha Music School, but a pivotal visit to her songwriter brother John W. Thompson in Nashville redirected her path toward arranging.

Over more than two decades, Tornquist has created over four hundred piano collections that church musicians and students rely on for their musicality, accessibility, and liturgical appropriateness. Her arrangements stand out for their thoughtful harmonic language and rhythmic sophistication, offering fresh reinterpretations of both familiar and contemporary material. An Alfred author since 2010, she remains committed to writing resources that serve pianists across skill levels and worship contexts, whether traditional, blended, or modern.

Why we love this

These arrangements strike a rare balance between emotional authenticity and musical restraint. Tornquist's harmonic choices elevate each song without overwhelming the melody or the spiritual intention behind it, making them genuinely rewarding to play in a worship setting where the music serves the moment rather than demanding attention to itself.

What to expect

Spiritually grounded and musically sophisticated. These arrangements honor the original melodies while wrapping them in warm, thoughtful harmonies that feel both familiar and renewed. The music breathes with intention, never cluttered or flashy, yet emotionally resonant.

Who it's for

Church pianists looking for substantial, well-crafted repertoire that bridges contemporary and traditional worship styles. This collection also works for piano students at the early advanced level who want to explore arranging craft and deepen their ability to play with interpretive sensitivity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Treat the prelude and postlude selections as opportunities to set or reflect the emotional tone of the service. Allow time for the congregation to settle or depart without rushing tempos.
  • Layer dynamics carefully during the offertory pieces. These arrangements often work best when you create subtle ebbs and flows rather than loud-soft contrasts.
  • Listen to the original recordings of unfamiliar contemporary crossover songs to internalize the emotional arc, then shape your phrasing to honor both the source material and Tornquist's reimagining.

How to use it

Use individual selections to anchor the opening, giving, or closing moments of a service, or group several pieces together for a contemplative prelude or postlude sequence. The collection's range also makes it ideal for wedding ceremonies, memorial services, or other pastoral moments where instrumental music deepens the spiritual atmosphere.

Skills your students will build

  • Voicing contemporary harmonic structures with tasteful chord extensions
  • Interpreting arrangements with sensitivity to lyrical and spiritual content
  • Managing hand position and technical flow across varied keyboard textures
  • Shaping phrasing to support emotional arc rather than individual notes
  • Reading and performing music designed for liturgical contexts
