About the Arranger: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin's work as a choral arranger and conductor has taken him across some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, from Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York to the Sydney Opera House and Royal Festival Hall in London. An ASCAP award-winning composer, he has also shaped the choral publishing landscape through his role at Shawnee Press, where he directs educational choral publications.

Beyond the concert stage, Gilpin has expanded his creative reach into film scoring and television, including work on the award-winning short film "Rosie's Rescue" and appearances on network programming. He holds active membership in ACDA, NAfME, and SAG-AFTRA, and continues to balance his teaching, composing, and conducting work with his growing professional organizing business.

Why we love this

Gilpin's arrangement captures what made this Carrie Underwood hit resonate across mainstream radio while remaining genuinely singable for mixed choirs. The SAB voicing opens this country-pop crossover to ensembles that might not tackle it in SATB, and the recorded accompaniment (available separately) lets you program a contemporary hit without needing a full band.

What to expect

Warm and hopeful, with the conversational charm of country pop. The arrangement maintains the earnestness of Underwood's original while the SAB voicing creates space for each section to shine, making it feel intimate even in larger group settings.

Who it's for

Mixed choirs with treble and lower voices that want to program accessible, radio-friendly music alongside their traditional repertoire. This works particularly well for show choirs, contemporary ensembles, or school groups looking to engage students with songs they already know and love.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the soloistic moments in the soprano line with the harmonic support of the alto and baritone parts; avoid letting the melody overshadow the foundation underneath.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to establish the groove and country feel, then dial in your tempo together before rehearsing without it so the choir owns the rhythmic pocket.
  • Shape the dynamic arc to build from the opening through the chorus; this song thrives on forward momentum rather than restraint.
  • Pay attention to vowel consistency across the three parts, especially in the sustained notes, to ensure clarity and blend even when the ranges sit differently.

How to use it

Pair this with other contemporary pop or country arrangements to create a modern song set, or use it as a standalone crowd-pleaser near the end of a concert where energy is high and the audience recognizes the tune. The accessibility and strong melodic hooks make it ideal for spring concerts, pops nights, or community performances where you want to showcase your singers doing music they're genuinely excited about.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with country-pop inflection and stylistic phrasing
  • Part independence in SAB voicing with equal weight across all three parts
  • Rhythmic precision in contemporary song forms with syncopation
  • Blending and balancing across different voice ranges in a narrower tessitura
