More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged more than 450 choral works now in active performance. His output spans secular and sacred settings, vocal resources for music literacy, and full-length children's musicals, all of which reflect his training in music education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University.

Beyond the printed page, Beck maintains an active presence as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician for ensembles across the United States and internationally. He has guest conducted honor choirs and all-state groups throughout the Southeast, serves as a studio singer for Alfred Music (since 1992), and performs as a tenor soloist and ensemble member with groups including the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir. His commitment to choral artistry and music literacy shapes both his own compositions and the publications he selects for Alfred's catalog.

Why we love this

Beck writes with a clear understanding of what 2-part singers can accomplish without overextending them. 'In the Arms of an Oak' settles singers into accessible vocal writing that still demands musicianship, making it equally suitable for festival adjudication or a concert program where you want something substantive but not technically daunting.

What to expect

The text and title suggest shelter and permanence in nature. Expect writing that balances lyricism with clarity, allowing singers to sit comfortably in their ranges while expressing something quiet and reflective.

Who it's for

This PianoTrax download works for middle school and high school choirs with developing sight-reading skills and steady 2-part experience. It also suits community choruses and adult ensembles looking for accessible, musically satisfying secular repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a warm, sustained tone in the first phrase. This piece benefits from singers who listen to each other's vowel shapes rather than pushing for volume.
  • Work the text expressively before adding full dynamics. Let the imagery of the poem guide your phrasing choices, then layer in dynamic shaping.
  • Balance the two parts so neither voice dominates. In 2-part writing, both lines carry melodic and harmonic responsibility equally.

How to use it

This piece fits naturally into a concert focused on seasonal themes or connections to nature. Its moderate length and approachable difficulty make it ideal as a contrasting selection between more challenging works or as a reliable opener that builds audience rapport early in your program.

Skills your students will build

  • Blending vowels across a sustained ensemble line
  • Shaping musical phrases through text expression
  • Maintaining independence in a 2-part texture
