About the Arranger: Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw has spent decades shaping choral music education across North America and Europe, earning recognition in 45 states and internationally for his distinctive approach to arranging and conducting. He holds degrees in Music Education and Choral Composition from San Jose State University and a DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington. His work in founding and directing award-winning vocal jazz ensembles at the College of the Siskiyous, Colorado State University, and the University of Missouri at Kansas City established him as a leader in innovative choral pedagogy.

With over 2,500 choral arrangements in print and nearly 20 million copies sold worldwide, Shaw has become one of the most prolific voices in contemporary choral music. His arrangements have earned multiple ASCAP awards, and he has overseen the production of numerous educational recordings and albums. Beyond his arranging work, Shaw performs with Just 4 Kicks, a jazz-focused a cappella quartet, and has collaborated with vocal legends including Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, and Jon Hendricks. His recent commission from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir reflects the breadth of his compositional and arranging influence.

Why we love this

Shaw's gift for pacing and textural variety within a medley framework means singers never feel bogged down, even across eight minutes. The SAB voicing opens this golden-age repertoire to choirs that might otherwise skip over Rodgers and Hart entirely, making classic song craft accessible without sacrificing musical substance. His light touch with these beloved standards creates the perfect antidote to a heavy concert while still showcasing genuine artistry.

What to expect

Sophisticated without pretension. These four standards shimmer with the elegance and wit that made Rodgers and Hart standards of the American songbook, but Shaw's arrangement keeps the mood approachable and joyful. The medley has the warmth of a well-crafted jazz night and the polish of carefully constructed vocal harmony.

Who it's for

Choirs with solid reading skills and blend already in place. The moderately difficult grade level demands secure part singers and confident blend, making this ideal for high school show choirs, college recreational choirs, or competitive adult ensembles looking to add accessible pops repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Treat each song section as its own moment rather than rushing through transitions; the medley gains impact when audiences recognize the shift from one standard to the next
  • Balance the harmony parts so the melody lines (carried by different voices across sections) remain audible; Shaw's voicing distributes the tune intentionally
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to lock ensemble precision, particularly where rhythmic figures shift between sections
  • Shape phrases with the natural phrasing of these melodies rather than forcing symmetry; Rodgers and Hart wrote singable, conversational lines

How to use it

This works brilliantly as a pops concert closer or as relief after a string of more substantial choral works. Program it where you want the audience to leave smiling, or use it to showcase your ensemble's ability to swing and blend in a contemporary pop context. At eight minutes, it carries enough substance to anchor a mixed program without feeling like filler.

Skills your students will build

  • Navigating multiple key centers and harmonic shifts within a single work
  • Maintaining clear diction and phrasing across stylistically distinct song sections
  • Blending jazz-influenced harmonies with classical choral technique
  • Reading and performing syncopated rhythmic figures in popular music contexts
  • Balancing part independence with ensemble cohesion in SAB voicing
