Why we love this

Balmages creates a sophisticated structural experience here by weaving recognizable Americana references into a contemporary fanfare that feels both rooted in tradition and distinctly modern. The convergence of melodic lines into a triumphant climax gives your ensemble a rewarding, high-impact moment that contest adjudicators and festival audiences recognize immediately as substantive concert writing.

What to expect

Propulsive and ceremonial, this piece opens with bright fanfare energy while threading lyrical passages that create depth and expressiveness. As themes build and interlace, the work gains momentum toward a powerful, unifying climax that feels both celebratory and genuinely accomplished.

Who it's for

Mature concert bands at the Grade 5 level, including advanced high school ensembles and strong community or regional bands ready for contest and festival performance. Directors seeking contemporary repertoire with strong structural coherence and programmatic appeal will find this particularly valuable.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the fanfare themes against the lyrical passages by adjusting sectional dynamics carefully; neither element should overpower the architecture Balmages has built.
  • Mark the points where thematic lines converge and rehearse those moments as full ensemble to ensure the final statement lands with unified power.
  • Use the conductor score's cuing to prepare sections for their entrance points within the complex layering of themes.

How to use it

Program this as a concert opener or closing piece where its contemporary language and triumphant character can frame your concert effectively. The contest/festival designation makes it ideal for competitive programming while its concert band scoring ensures accessibility for ensembles at the right maturity level.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing complex thematic material in contemporary concert band writing
  • Balance and blend across sections when multiple melodic lines sound simultaneously
  • Dynamic control and phrasing within fanfare idioms
  • Ensemble precision during climactic moments requiring unified articulation and attack
  • Interpretation of contemporary American concert band aesthetics
