Alice Parker

Alice Parker shaped American choral music through her deep engagement with vernacular songs, spirituals, and hymns. A composition and conducting student at Smith College and Juilliard, she formed a creative partnership with Robert Shaw that produced hundreds of settings now sung by choruses across the world. Her published works span operas, cantatas, song cycles, and individual anthems, totaling more than five hundred compositions.

Parker's influence extends beyond the score. She founded Melodious Accord, Inc. in 1985 to center her work on melody itself, and authored books on melodic style, choral improvisation, and church music practice. Her leadership roles included service on the Board of Directors of Chorus America, where she became their first Director Laureate. Recognition includes the Robert Shaw Award from the American Choral Directors Association (2013), the Harvard Glee Club Foundation Medal (2015), and six honorary doctorates, along with support from ASCAP, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music.
