More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged more than 450 works for singers of all ages. His output spans choral octavos, vocal resources, children's musicals, and sight-singing curricula (Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique), and his music reaches choirs worldwide through constant performance and streaming. He holds degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University.

Beyond the page, Beck works as a guest conductor, choreographer, adjudicator, and clinician across the United States and internationally. He has served as commissioned composer and conductor for all-state honor choirs and brings hands-on theatrical and performance experience as a tenor, musical theatre director, and longtime studio singer. His dual commitment to choral artistry and music literacy shapes both his own compositions and the publications he curates for Alfred.

Why we love this

Beck writes novelty pieces with genuine warmth and theatrical flair, and this one pairs accessible Latin rhythms with staging that keeps rehearsals energetic without demanding elaborate costumes or sets. The recorded accompaniment means you can rehearse independently while students absorb the groove, and the built-in choreography gives even reluctant singers a physical way into the music.

What to expect

Upbeat and playful, driven by Latin percussion and syncopated rhythm. The novelty framing keeps things light and fun while the choral writing remains accessible and singable, making it feel celebratory without being precious.

Who it's for

This recording is designed for middle and high school choirs looking for a winter concert showstopper with a contemporary groove and built-in choreography. Directors seeking a piece that engages less-experienced singers and appeals to audiences of all ages will find the novelty approach and movement component especially valuable.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the Latin rhythm section (clave and percussion foundation) before adding melody layers; use the accompaniment track to internalize the pocket rather than fight it.
  • Integrate the movement cues early in rehearsal so the choreography becomes automatic and singers stay focused on blend and intonation.
  • Balance the playful character with clean diction; these lyrics need clarity to land the humor and energy of the piece.

How to use it

Pair this with your program's opening number or as a first-act closer to set an energetic, community-friendly tone. Its winter seasonality makes it ideal for holiday concerts, and the Latin flavor complements both classical and contemporary programming without clashing.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in Latin rhythm styles (clave, syncopation, offbeat entrances)
  • Coordinating movement with ensemble singing and breath control
  • Interpreting stylistic elements (swagger, bounce, rhythmic precision) in contemporary choral writing
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment tracks with independence and ensemble cohesion
