About the Composer: William Owens

William Owens

William Owens brings three decades of classroom experience to his compositional work. A graduate of VanderCook College of Music and a native of Gary, Indiana, Owens has established himself as a prolific voice in young ensemble music, with over 300 published titles for concert band, string orchestra, and small ensembles since 1993. His writing is rooted in practical pedagogy and genuine understanding of what students can achieve.

Owens has earned recognition through commissions from major music organizations, inclusion on required music lists across North America, and analysis in educational texts. He holds membership in ASCAP, served for 30 years as a band director in Texas, and has received the Meritorious Achievement Award from the Texas Bandmasters Association. He currently resides in Fort Worth with his wife, Georgia.

Why we love this

Owens captures the raw energy of Ukrainian folk idiom without requiring advanced technical facility. The orchestration strikes an ideal balance between giving every section engaging material and keeping the part writing accessible for Grade 2.5 ensembles. The optional percussion parts are genuinely useful rather than decorative, allowing you to scale the impact based on what your orchestra can handle.

What to expect

The opening statement arrives with unrestrained vitality, immediately establishing the fiery character that carries through the entire work. Ukrainian folk melodies drive the piece forward with propulsive rhythms and bright melodic lines that feel both authentic and thoroughly engaging. The overall effect is one of celebration and pure musical joy.

Who it's for

This conductor score is designed for string orchestra directors working with Grade 2.5 ensembles who want an exciting, culturally engaging piece without excessive technical demands. It works beautifully for groups preparing for festival or contest programming. Directors seeking accessible arrangements that don't sacrifice energy or musicality will find a strong choice here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock in the rhythmic drive of the opening statement with your entire string section; this piece lives on forward momentum and articulation clarity.
  • If using the optional percussion parts, schedule dedicated rehearsal time to balance them with the strings so they enhance rather than bury the melody.
  • Encourage first violins to project the folk melodies with confidence and slight rubato; these lines are the soul of the arrangement and deserve musical generosity.
  • Shape the fiery passages with dynamic contrast; the contrast between spirited sections and any more lyrical moments (if present) will keep the performance engaging from opening to final note.

How to use it

This piece is an excellent closer for any concert, bringing high energy and audience appeal to the final moments of your program. It works particularly well at festivals or contests where you need a strong closing statement that showcases student enthusiasm and ensemble cohesion. Consider pairing it with a contrasting selection earlier in your program to highlight the range of your orchestra's abilities.

Skills your students will build

  • Articulation and rhythmic precision in folk-inspired melodic lines
  • Ensemble balance when optional percussion parts are included
  • Dynamic control across spirited, sustained passages
  • Projection of clear melodic material in multiple string parts
  • Reading and performing multicultural repertoire with authentic character
