About the Composer: Mark Williams

Mark Williams

Mark Williams shaped the landscape of school band education through both pedagogy and composition. As co-author of the foundational Accent on Achievement Band Method, he influenced generations of young musicians while maintaining an prolific output of over 200 published works for band, orchestra, and choir. His teaching career in Washington state focused on building strong elementary band programs, and he earned recognition through the Gralia Competition and multiple ASCAP Special Awards.

Beyond the page, Williams was a working musician and advocate for bands across North America. He served as woodwind performer and arranger for the 560th Air Force Band, conducted the Spokane British Brass Band as its Artistic Director, and traveled to 34 states, five Canadian provinces, and Australia as a clinician and guest conductor. His dual expertise in what students need to play and what composers can write created works that are both accessible and genuinely musical.

Why we love this

Williams writes with a keen understanding of what middle-grade bands can accomplish without compromise. Highbridge Excursions delivers engaging, well-crafted writing that makes students want to practice their parts while building fundamental skills naturally. It's the kind of piece that programs confidently and sounds polished after reasonable rehearsal time.

What to expect

The piece has a sense of forward motion and adventure that lives up to its title. Bright colors in the instrumentation and clear melodic writing create an impression of exploration, with moments of reflection balanced against energetic passages.

Who it's for

Grade 3 concert bands ready for material with genuine musicality and orchestration sophistication. Works equally well for typical school band rehearsals and festival performances where you want to represent your program meaningfully.

How to get the most out of it

  • Build the rhythmic precision in the ensemble first. Williams layers rhythmic figures throughout, and locking these patterns early prevents rushing during performance.
  • Shape the melodic lines with intentional phrasing rather than playing straight through. The piece rewards directors who help students hear where phrases breathe and communicate.
  • Balance the woodwind-to-brass ratio carefully during tutti sections so the inner voices remain audible. This reveals the harmonic sophistication underneath.

How to use it

Include this as a concert centerpiece when you want substantive programming without excessive rehearsal demand. It pairs well alongside lighter novelty pieces or as a strong anchor in a contest set where you need confident, musical repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision in layered textures
  • Phrasing and breath management across flowing melodic lines
  • Balance and blend within mixed instrumentation
  • Attention to inner voice independence and harmonic awareness
  • Dynamic control and shaping beyond basic forte/piano extremes
