Robert Sheldon stands among the most frequently programmed composers of wind band literature in the country. His works appear regularly on state and national contest lists, and ensembles across the globe perform his music in concert halls, theaters, and competition venues. He co-authored Sound Innovations for Concert Band and has received recognition from the American School Band Directors Association, Phi Beta Mu, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Sheldon maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor for All-State and Regional Honor Bands, as well as a clinician at universities and state music education conferences. He has led performances of his compositions at Carnegie Hall, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Boston Symphony Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. VanderCook College of Music awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2020.
