More about this title

About the Composer: Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney began piano study at age four and went on to study extensively at North Texas State University, where she accompanied choral ensembles and developed the compositional skills that would define her career. Her published output spans over 350 titles for choirs, piano, handbells, and solo voice, with recognition including multiple ASCAP Plus Awards and mentorship from Dove Award winner Mark Hayes. She continues to compose and arrange while maintaining a private piano and composition studio in Columbia, Tennessee.

Why we love this

Courtney writes with genuine warmth for the choral voice, and this piece captures the joy and spiritual significance of Hanukkah in a way that feels fresh rather than dutiful. The recorded accompaniment gives you flexibility in rehearsal and performance, whether you're building parts independently or adding a full instrumental foundation.

What to expect

The piece conveys celebration and light, both musically and thematically, with an accessible melody and harmonic language that feels inclusive and warm. It carries the spiritual weight appropriate to the holiday without demanding virtuosic technique.

Who it's for

This octavo works for treble, mixed, or men's choirs looking to add meaningful winter holiday repertoire beyond the Christmas standard. It serves choirs of moderate difficulty that want to honor Jewish heritage and include diverse traditions in seasonal programming.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the vocal line with the recorded accompaniment so singers remain clearly audible; rehearse with the track at performance volume to develop confidence.
  • Encourage singers to shape phrases expressively within the rhythmic structure rather than holding back; this piece rewards committed, warm tone production.
  • Use the accompaniment strategically in early rehearsals as a learning tool, then gradually reduce reliance on it as singers internalize their parts and blend.

How to use it

Program this as part of a winter or holiday concert that intentionally represents multiple faith traditions, or use it as a thoughtful addition to a concert celebrating cultural diversity. It works equally well as a concert opener that sets a celebratory tone or as a closing piece that leaves audiences with a sense of shared joy.

Skills your students will build
