More about this title

About the Composer: Pepper Choplin

Pepper Choplin

Pepper Choplin holds degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Bachelor of Music) and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas (Master of Music in composition). Over the course of his career, he has composed more than two hundred anthems and seven choral musicals, drawing inspiration from a wide range of musical traditions including rock, classical, and bluegrass.

As Minister of Music at Greystone Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, Choplin channels his creative energy into worship planning and composition. He travels nationally as a clinician, conductor, and entertainer, leading workshops and conducting performances that blend inspirational and humorous music. His recordings, including the self-produced "Pepper Is My Real Name" and the solo album "Hold On," showcase his gift for both comedic and deeply moving musical storytelling. Choplin's compositional philosophy centers on creating music that invites dramatic, genuine worship.

Why we love this

Choplin's secular choral writing carries genuine humor and infectious energy without sacrificing musical substance. This piece works brilliantly in mixed-voice settings where you want audiences to leave smiling, and the recorded accompaniment means you can confidently program it even if rehearsal time is tight. The title alone signals fun, but the music delivers the kind of wit that lands with both teenagers and adult singers.

What to expect

Upbeat and playful, with the kind of contemporary groove that makes singers want to move. The music has a modern, accessible feel rooted in popular idiom, designed to engage both performers and listeners with humor and spirit.

Who it's for

Mixed choral ensembles (high school through adult community choirs) looking for a secular concert or festival piece that energizes singers and audiences alike. Directors seeking a strong opener, closer, or standalone number for a program.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the rhythmic precision of the accompaniment to keep the piece driving forward; the groove depends on tight attacks and releases with the recorded track.
  • Trust the humor in the lyrics and let singers commit fully to character without overacting; Choplin's music is most effective when performed with genuine personality rather than winking at the audience.
  • Balance ensemble blend with clarity on the text so the title and message land clearly for listeners.

How to use it

Program this as a concert opener to establish energy and good humor, or use it as a finale to send the audience home laughing. It pairs well alongside more serious repertoire as a palate cleanser and works equally effectively in festival settings where a memorable moment makes an impression.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision with contemporary groove patterns
  • Balancing ensemble blend while delivering clear text communication
