Description
Yep, another chicken-themed chart set in a rock groove played at 132 BPM. Solos are provided for alto 1 and trumpet 2, lead trumpet range is to written G on top of the staff. Yeah, it's rock groove, but there are plenty of dynamics and contrasts throughout. Optional vibes. This is a fun chart! (4:40)

About the Composer: Kris Berg

Kris Berg

Kris Berg directs the Jazz Studies program at Collin County Community College in Texas, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in jazz studies from the University of North Texas. His work has shaped ensembles that have earned multiple invitations to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and he founded both the Collin Jazz Fest and the Texas All-Star Jazz Camp. Berg's arrangements and compositions have been performed and recorded internationally, establishing him as a prolific voice in big band and jazz ensemble writing for Belwin Jazz, a division of Alfred Publishing.

As a clinician and endorsing artist for Yamaha Corporation of America, Berg has shared the bandstand with world-class jazz musicians including Kurt Elling, Randy Brecker, Peter Erskine, Bob Mintzer, and Clark Terry, among many others. He is also the author of Bass Lines in Minutes, a widely used instructional resource. Berg remains active on the jazz festival and camp circuit throughout the United States and is endorsed by Walter Woods Amplifiers.

Why we love this

A rock groove with genuine swagger and humor doesn't sacrifice musicality, and Berg delivers exactly that here. The solos for alto 1 and trumpet 2 give frontline voices clear moments to shine without requiring virtuosic demands, while the lead trumpet sits at a manageable written G making the part accessible for growing high note players. What seals it is the dynamic and textural variety woven throughout a four-minute arc that keeps the energy fresh and the room engaged.

What to expect

A clever, tongue-in-cheek romp with the kind of groovy swagger that makes an audience grin before the ensemble even finishes the first phrase. The rock pocket sits steady and tight, punctuated by contrasts in dynamics and texture that prevent the chart from becoming predictable, all while maintaining an air of playful confidence that suits both young players and seasoned listeners.

Who it's for

Jazz ensembles at the Grade 2.5 level will find this chart both playable and genuinely fun to perform. The writing respects developing musicians while delivering a piece with real personality, making it ideal for directors who want to program something with humor and style without overshooting their group's technical range.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the groove early in rehearsal by isolating the rhythm section and establishing the 132 BPM pocket with precision before layering horns; the rock feel demands consistency underneath.
  • Shape the dynamics explicitly. The chart uses contrast as a compositional tool, so marking soft sections and punchy figures in parts ensures players hear the architecture Berg has written.
  • Balance the alto 1 and trumpet 2 solos by running them in sectional rehearsals first, then placing them in context with full ensemble so soloists understand where they sit rhythmically and texturally.
  • Treat the optional vibes as a textural choice that can clarify comping or deepen the rock color depending on your ensemble's needs and instrumentation.

How to use it

This works beautifully as an opener or closer in a mixed-genre concert, especially one pairing classical or traditional big band charts alongside more contemporary material. Its four-minute-forty-second duration fits neatly into a concert set, and the approachable level makes it ideal for a mid-year concert before tackling more complex repertoire in the spring.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing rock grooves with precision
  • Balancing ensemble dynamics across contrasting sections
  • Solo construction and phrasing in a funk-rock context
  • Articulation and style in contemporary jazz idioms
  • Ensemble tuning and blend within a full jazz ensemble texture
