Beginning his arrangement career at fifteen in Panama City, Florida, he went on to direct the Jazz Ensemble at Troy State University during his undergraduate years while also serving as the university band program's staff arranger. After earning his Master of Science degree in 1988, he joined the faculty to teach orchestration, arranging, theory, and applied brass for fifteen years.

As an exclusive composer and arranger for Alfred Music's Belwin division, Ford has created over 250 titles performed by school, university, military, and professional ensembles worldwide.
