About the Composer: Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages commands respect across orchestral, band, and chamber music circles as both composer and conductor. His works have graced stages from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House, performed by ensembles spanning from professional orchestras to elementary school groups. He received the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association and won the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest. An elected member of the American Bandmasters Association, Balmages holds the James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Award and was commissioned by the University of Miami to compose music for the inauguration of its 6th president.

As a conductor, Balmages maintains a regular presence at all-state and regional ensembles, university groups, and professional orchestras worldwide. His guest conducting appearances include the Midwest Clinic, Western International Band Clinic, College Band Directors Conference, and the American School Band Directors Association National Conference. He currently serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic.
