About the Composer: Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages has established himself as a composer and conductor working fluidly across orchestral, band, and chamber repertoires. His works have been performed by everyone from professional symphony orchestras to elementary school ensembles, reaching audiences at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Sydney Opera House, and venues worldwide. He received the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association and won the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest for Love and Light. An elected member of the American Bandmasters Association, Balmages holds the distinction of being James Madison University's inaugural Distinguished Alumni Award recipient from the School of Visual and Performing Arts.

His music was performed at the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service and he has been commissioned by the University of Miami to compose for institutional inaugurations. As a conductor, Balmages maintains regular engagements with all-state and regional ensembles, university orchestras, and professional groups internationally, with notable appearances at the Midwest Clinic, College Band Directors Conference, and state ASTA conferences. He currently serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic.
