Why we love this

Moore captures the infectious energy and call-and-response character of this spiritual while keeping the arrangement lean enough to learn quickly in December. The gospel-style refrain gives your singers a satisfying, repeatable hook, and the brief verse solos create natural moments for featuring your strongest voices without overwhelming rehearsal time.

What to expect

Joyful and propulsive, with the warmth and collective spirit of a spiritual sung by people who mean it. The gospel-inflected harmony and refrain structure recall congregational singing, and the solos invite moments of individual witness before the full group swells back in.

Who it's for

TTB choirs of intermediate ability who need a Christmas piece that's both musically substantial and rehearsal-efficient. This works equally well for church choirs, community ensembles, and school choirs looking to add authentic spiritual energy to their holiday concert.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the rhythmic pocket between the refrain melody and the gospel feel in the accompaniment; this syncopation is what gives the arrangement its drive.
  • Let the verse solos breathe slightly before the full choir enters on the refrain; the contrast makes both sections land harder.
  • Bring out the harmonic movement in the lower voices during the refrain; they anchor the spiritual groove and deserve clarity.

How to use it

Pair this with other sacred or traditional pieces to create a Christmas program that balances reverence with exuberance. Its straightforward energy and familiarity make it ideal as a second or third selection when you want to shift the mood after a quieter opening piece.

Skills your students will build

  • Gospel-style rhythmic interpretation and swing feel
  • Blending in full-voice refrain passages after solo sections
  • Harmonic awareness in TTB voicing, especially lower voice independence
  • Quick learning and memorization under rehearsal time constraints
