About the Arranger: Victor C. Johnson

Victor C. Johnson

Victor C. Johnson brings three decades of choral leadership to his work as School Choral Editor for Sing!, the educational publishing division of Choristers Guild. Based in Dallas, Texas, he directed choral ensembles at Ft. Worth Academy of Fine Arts for nearly two decades, where he built programs across mixed voices, men's voices, and multiple youth choirs. Since 2022, he has served as conductor of the Dallas Symphony Children's Chorus Mixed Ensemble, leading high school singers as the resident youth choir for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

Johnson's catalog includes over 500 published choral works, vocal solos, and keyboard collections. His professional memberships span the American Choral Directors Association, American Guild of Organists, Texas Music Educators Association, National Association for Music Education, and ASCAP, reflecting his deep engagement with both composition and choral pedagogy.

Why we love this

Johnson's arrangement captures the joy and immediacy of a beloved spiritual while remaining fully accessible for student choirs. The accompaniment drives the piece forward without overwhelming young singers, and the recorded track gives directors a flexible rehearsal and performance option that sounds polished without requiring a live pianist.

What to expect

Bright, declarative, and driven forward with conviction. The spiritual's traditional core shines through an arrangement that's contemporary in feel but rooted in the genre's call-and-response power.

Who it's for

High school and middle school choirs seeking a strong Christmas selection that energizes audiences without demanding advanced musicianship. Youth choirs and church ensembles will find this both singable and festive.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the parts so the text remains clear; the energy of the arrangement can push singers into oversinging, which muddies the lyrics.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment in rehearsal to lock the ensemble's phrasing and rhythmic feel before singing with a live accompanist.
  • Shape the dynamic arc across the full piece rather than treating each phrase in isolation; this arrangement rewards structural awareness.

How to use it

Program this as a closing number on a winter concert to send audiences out with authentic joy and energy. It pairs well alongside other spirituals or Christmas traditions, or stands alone as a statement piece on a mixed program.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with rhythmic precision in a spirituals-influenced style
  • Maintaining clarity of text in a rhythmically active arrangement
  • Responding to the energy and pacing set by a recorded accompaniment
  • Understanding call-and-response traditions within a contemporary choral context
