About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped American choral music for decades as a composer, conductor, and influential figure in music publishing. Her catalog spans over 600 choral works and 75 larger publications, earning her consistent ASCAP recognition since 1987. She has conducted honor choirs at major venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, and spent more than 30 years directing choral and vocal publications at leading educational publishers, culminating in her role at Alfred Music.

Albrecht's education reflects her diverse musical foundation. She earned a B.A. in Music and Theater from Rollins College (1976), followed by an M.A. in Drama and an M.M. in Accompanying from the University of Miami (1977 and 1979 respectively). She has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. A native of Cleveland, Albrecht lives in North Carolina with composer and arranger Jay Althouse. Her leadership extends beyond composition to service on the Board of Trustees for Omicron Delta Kappa, and she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College in 2021.

Why we love this

Albrecht writes double choir music that sounds expansive without requiring your ensemble to be enormous. The antiphonal positioning option turns your physical space into a musical tool, creating spatial drama that audiences find genuinely moving. It's challenging enough to engage advanced singers and rewarding enough to program at adjudication or concert with confidence.

What to expect

The piece radiates joy with a romantic-era warmth that feels both celebratory and intimate. Dramatic shifts in dynamics and texture keep the ear engaged, while the full vocal range creates moments of surprising brightness and depth, building toward moments of genuine choral power.

Who it's for

Advanced high school and college choirs ready for the technical and musical demands of double choir writing. Directors seeking a challenging a cappella work that combines artistic merit with festival and concert programming appeal, especially those with access to antiphonal staging options or the flexibility to divide their ensemble.

How to get the most out of it

  • Experiment with the antiphonal setup during rehearsal to find the acoustic sweet spot in your performance space; even a modest hall gains dimension when Choir II is positioned to the sides or rear.
  • Map the dynamic contrasts carefully, as the piece moves between intimate moments and fuller textures; mark these transitions in your scores so singers understand the emotional arc.
  • Allow time for your singers to adjust to the full vocal range demands before combining both choirs; sectional work on the extremes of the range ensures confidence and intonation security.
  • Let the romantic-era sensibility breathe; avoid rushing the varied tempi, which are essential to the piece's character and give singers room to shape phrases expressively.

How to use it

Place this work as a centerpiece on a mixed choral concert, where its dramatic antiphonal possibilities shine. It also stands effectively on adjudication schedules, giving judges a clear window into your ensemble's musicianship, range, and ensemble balance.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in extended vocal ranges (both high and low pitches)
  • Responding to rapid dynamic shifts and maintaining intonation through contrasts
  • Blending and balance in double choir textures
  • Interpreting varied tempi and romantic-era phrasing without instrumental support
  • Ensemble awareness when positioned antiphonally in performance space
  • Sustaining tuning and tone quality across complex harmonic movement
