W. S. Gilbert (1836-1911) was a playwright, librettist, and lyricist whose witty, rhyming texts became the foundation of one of music theater's most enduring partnerships. His collaboration with composer Arthur Sullivan produced fourteen comic operas between 1875 and 1896, works that defined the genre and continue to dominate school and community theater repertoires worldwide.
