Description
Four to Go demonstrates in a fun way how many different sounds can be made easily on a snare drum. The form of the work is AABA with a Coda. The first A section consists of three standard 16-beat cadences in unison. The rhythms in the next A section are based on the original themes, but are broken up among the three players. The B section includes a wide variety of sounds including clicking sticks, taps on the rim, shell, music stand and even a foot stomp. The recapitulation by means of a D.C. includes some of the material in both of the A sections before moving to the short coda, which provides an energetic drive to the final measure.

More about this title

Why we love this

Four to Go proves that percussion writing at Grade 2 doesn't mean boring or limited. The exploration of extended techniques on a single instrument type demonstrates compositional sophistication without requiring technical virtuosity, and the AABA structure with its clear formal landmarks makes it an excellent teaching tool for understanding musical architecture.

What to expect

Energetic and playful, with moments of sharp percussive color. The piece celebrates the snare drum's vocabulary, moving from clean, unified sounds to a palette of clicks, taps, and body hits that feel inventive without veering into gimmicky.

Who it's for

Percussion ensembles or snare drum sections ready to move beyond basic rudimentary playing. The Grade 2 level makes it accessible for middle school groups while remaining musically substantive enough to hold the attention of more advanced players in a multi-percussion setting.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish consistent stick control among the four players during the unison A sections so the cadences sit with unified weight and articulation.
  • Rehearse the B section sounds in isolation before running them in tempo; clicking sticks and rim taps need distinct attack points to cut through without muddying together.
  • Let the optional bass drum and cymbals enhance the final coda's energy rather than dominate it, their role is to support, not overshadow, the snare writing.
  • Mark the D.C. carefully in parts so players understand which material returns; the recapitulation combines both A sections, so clarity prevents confusion.

How to use it

Program this as a standalone percussion spotlight during a concert's lighter section, or use it to open a snare line during a full band concert. Its compact length and self-contained drama make it ideal for a pops or family concert context where percussion gets its own showcase.

Skills your students will build

  • Extended snare drum technique (clicking sticks, rim taps, shell taps, non-traditional striking surfaces)
  • Reading and executing rhythmic unison at fast tempos
  • Distributing rhythmic material across multiple players
  • Dynamic control and articulation consistency across an ensemble
  • Understanding formal analysis (AABA structure with coda and D.C.)
