About the Composer: Alan A Craig

Alan A Craig

Alan A Craig is a Scottish composer, conductor, and educator who has shaped music education and performance across the UK and beyond. Based in Glasgow, he directs the music program at Glasgow Clyde College and holds degrees from both the University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde. His compositions span from children's opera (The Nicht's the Nicht!) to large-scale choral works (A Diminished Mass), many of which have been performed internationally and featured in television and film.

Craig's impact extends far beyond composition. He founded the Springfield Cambridge Festival Chorus and Orchestra in 2002, an organization that has become a model for community music making, bringing together hundreds of skilled amateur and professional musicians for annual concerts that have raised over £500,000 for Children's Hospices Across Scotland. His conducting credits include work with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of London, and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2026, King Charles III appointed him MBE in recognition of his contributions to music education and charitable work.

Why we love this

Craig's seasonal rounds feel crafted by someone who understands how choirs actually work together. The four separate pieces give directors genuine flexibility to program them individually throughout the year, or perform them as a thematic set, and the recorded accompaniments let even smaller programs access polished, confident backing without needing a pianist or rehearsal band.

What to expect

These rounds capture the essence of each season with clarity and warmth. Craig's straightforward harmonic language and memorable melodic contours make the pieces feel immediate and singable, while the layered vocal textures create genuine ensemble satisfaction without demanding virtuosity.

Who it's for

Any choral director seeking accessible, engaging rounds that work for community choirs, school ensembles, or church music programs. The seasonal theme makes these pieces especially useful for programming throughout the calendar year, and the recorded accompaniments remove barriers for programs without live accompanists.

How to get the most out of it

  • Prepare the ensemble with the recorded accompaniment from the start so singers can lock into the rhythmic and harmonic framework before focusing on blend and balance.
  • Layer parts gradually during rehearsal; introduce the melody first, then add harmonies one at a time so each voice part feels secure and confident.
  • Highlight the seasonal imagery in interpretation: adjust dynamics and phrasing to match each round's emotional character, from winter's introspection to summer's brightness.
  • Use the reproducible format to print extra score copies for sectional rehearsals, allowing each voice part to work independently while still connecting to the whole.

How to use it

Build a themed concert around all four rounds, performing them in seasonal sequence as a cohesive program segment, or space them throughout the year for holiday concerts, spring programs, and fall celebrations. The reproducible format makes it easy to print programs and parts for each performance occasion without additional licensing fees.

Skills your students will build
