About the Composer: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was later honored as a Distinguished Alumnus. His career spans both the publishing and composing worlds; he spent eight years managing rights and licenses for a major educational music publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. Today he is recognized as a prolific composer with more than 800 choral works in print, performed regularly across the English-speaking world.

Althouse's contributions to music education extend well beyond composition. He has co-created children's musicals with his wife Sally K. Albrecht, edited respected vocal solo collections including Folk Songs for Solo Singers, and authored or co-authored several influential educational resources such as The Complete Choral Warm-up Book, Accent on Composers, and Ready to Read Music. A writer member of ASCAP and regular recipient of the ASCAP Special Award, Althouse has also been recognized for collaborative work at the highest levels; he and Albrecht co-wrote I Hear America Singing, performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration. He currently serves on the National Advisory Board of the Folk Art Society of America.
