Description
Characterized with sweeping melodies driving dynamic rhythms interrupted with peaceful serene passages built upon charismatic melodies---this musical tribute will not soon be forgotten. Dedicated to Gene Wilder and commissioned by Georgia Band Directors Association, this revered mentor will be remembered for eternity. The catalyst for the predominant part of the material are the notes G, E, and N (either an upper or lower neighboring note), and E---combined with the melody from Mr. Wilders' favorite hymn. One listen and you'll be hooked. High energy paired with deep emotion is the recipe for this wonderful work. (7:00)

More about this title

About the Composer: Ralph Ford

Ralph Ford

Ralph Ford has shaped concert band repertoire for three decades through his work as composer, arranger, and conductor. Beginning his arranging career at fifteen, he earned his degrees from Troy State University while simultaneously building the jazz program there and later joining the music faculty as instructor and staff arranger. Since 1999, he has worked exclusively with the Belwin division of Alfred Music, producing over 250 works across orchestra, concert band, jazz ensemble, and marching band that have been performed by university, military, professional, community, and school ensembles internationally.

Beyond concert music, Ford's versatility extends into media production, broadcast work, and commercial composition, including award-winning jingles and animation scores. His dual expertise in both live musical performance and studio production informs the dramatic range and cinematic quality of his band compositions.

Why we love this

Ford crafts a piece that genuinely rewards the ensemble and audience through skillful balance of spectacle and substance. The structural foundation built on the notes G, E, N, and E (a biographical anchor dedicated to Gene Wilder) provides both thematic coherence and an elegant constraint that prevents the sweeping energy from becoming unfocused. Grade 4 writing that respects both the capabilities and intelligence of advancing musicians.

What to expect

The music sweeps forward with driving purpose before settling into moments of genuine quiet reflection, creating a arc that feels both cinematic and deeply personal. The interplay between energy and serenity builds a sense of tribute and remembrance without becoming sentimental, honoring a mentor's legacy through music that breathes.

Who it's for

Concert bands at the advancing intermediate level seeking a substantial work that combines technical accessibility with emotional depth. This piece rewards ensembles ready to shape longer musical phrases and manage ensemble balance across multiple contrasting sections.

How to get the most out of it

  • Map the dynamic arc across the full seven minutes to avoid peaking too early; the serene passages function as structural breathers, not diminishments, and should feel intentional within the larger narrative.
  • Balance the charismatic melodic material against the rhythmic momentum in the driving sections; neither should overpower the other, allowing both elements to reinforce the tribute's emotional weight.
  • Confirm uniform articulation across the ensemble during the rhythmic interruptions, as clarity in these moments heightens the contrast with the sweeping passages that surround them.

How to use it

Position this as a centerpiece for a concert rather than a filler piece; the seven-minute runtime and emotional arc deserve a program slot with space around it. The contest/festival designation makes it suitable for festival programming, but it's equally powerful as the anchor of a community concert or commemorative event. Consider pairing it with lighter fare to give audiences, and your band, breathing room.

Skills your students will build

  • Shaping extended melodic lines across phrase structures longer than eight measures
  • Balancing independent rhythmic figures against sustained harmonic movement
  • Managing dynamic control through contrasting sections that require precision ensemble listening
  • Responding to subtle tempo and expression changes that govern structural transitions
