About the Composer: John Kinyon

John Kinyon

John Kinyon earned degrees from Ithaca College and the Eastman School of Music, along with an honorary doctorate from Limestone College. His career spans instrumental music direction in multiple school districts, educational leadership at Warner Brothers Music in New York, and a faculty position in music education at the University of Miami.

Kinyon has become one of the most prolific composers for educational ensembles, with over 250 published works for Alfred spanning Grade 1 through Grade 3. His catalog includes original marches, ballads, and overtures written across a wide range of musical styles. Since 1982, he has devoted his time to composing from his home in Tuckasegee, North Carolina.

Why we love this

Kinyon knows exactly what intermediate bands need: music with real melodic substance that doesn't require the precision of higher-level ensemble work. Flurry gives your students something genuinely engaging to play rather than exercises disguised as concert pieces. The craftsmanship here means your band will sound prepared and polished even early in the season.

What to expect

Flurry captures forward motion and energy while remaining accessible. The piece breathes with genuine melodic content rather than filling time with scale passages, giving players real music to sink their teeth into and audiences something memorable to listen to.

Who it's for

Intermediate concert bands at the Grade 2 level who are ready for music with substance but still developing technical facility. Directors seeking contest or festival material that showcases student musicianship without overwhelming newer ensembles will find this essential.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melodic line across your sections so the 'strong melodic material' lands clearly without one voice dominating.
  • Mark the transitions between sections in your parts; Grade 2 ensembles benefit from visual cues about where the music shifts.
  • Settle the tempo early in rehearsals and lock it in before adding expression, since younger bands often rush when concentrating on multiple layers.
  • Let the rhythm section anchor the ensemble during the development section; their stability will support the wind players as they handle the main material.

How to use it

Schedule this for fall or winter festivals where you want to show growth without overreaching your ensemble's abilities. It pairs well with a march and lighter novelty piece on the same concert, providing a centerpiece that demonstrates your band's musicality.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing independent melodic lines within an ensemble texture
  • Sustaining longer musical phrases with control and shape
  • Responding to sectional cues and coordinating entrances across multiple parts
  • Developing tone quality appropriate to Grade 2 repertoire expectations
  • Understanding form through the development of melodic material
