About the Composer: Carl Strommen

Carl Strommen stands among the most frequently performed composer-arrangers working in concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and choral music today. His work appears regularly on concert stages, in film, and on television, and he maintains an active schedule as both a clinician and commissioned composer, having earned ASCAP's Standard Writers Award annually throughout his career.
A graduate of City College of New York, Strommen has remained connected to music education as an adjunct professor of orchestration and composition at C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. He divides his time between Long Island and extended family stays in Colorado.
Why we love this
Strommen writes fanfares that feel genuinely celebratory without sacrificing musicianship. This piece opens or closes a program with unmistakable energy and clarity, and the Grade 3 difficulty means even developing bands can deliver a polished, confident performance that audiences remember.
What to expect
Bright and forward-moving, with the unmistakable ceremonial character of a well-crafted fanfare. The piece radiates energy and purpose, signaling to an audience that something important is about to happen or has just concluded.
Who it's for
Any concert band at the intermediate level seeking a sharp, accessible opening or closing piece for a formal program. This is ideal for honor bands, festival concerts, or any program where you need to establish an immediate sense of occasion without programming something overly complex.
How to get the most out of it
- Establish the pulse firmly from the downbeat so the bright energy reads as controlled excitement rather than chaos.
- Balance the melody line across sections; this fanfare works best when the primary theme sings clearly through the band.
- Use the full dynamic range the score offers. The contrast between softer sections and the climactic moments will enhance the celebratory character.
- Keep articulation crisp and uniform across the band, especially in rhythmic figures, to maintain the sharp, fanfare-like quality.
How to use it
Open your concert with this to set an uplifted tone immediately, or place it as the final piece to send audiences out on a high note. It works equally well as the opening statement at a festival or competition, where a strong first impression matters.
Skills your students will build
- Executing clean, unified articulation across multiple sections
- Balancing independent melodic lines within a full band texture
- Responding to dynamic contrast and shaping phrases with energy
- Sustaining ensemble precision at an excited tempo
