About the Composer: Kathleen Massoud

Kathleen Massoud

Kathleen Massoud studied piano performance at both Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut and Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts, building a foundation in classical technique and artistry. Since establishing the Massoud Piano Studio in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1980 with her husband, she has taught piano privately for over two decades and maintained active involvement with the National Guild of Piano Teachers and the Southeastern Chapter of the Massachusetts Music Teachers Association.

Beyond her studio teaching, Massoud pursues creative outlets in poetry and serves her church community through volunteer work and participation in the church choir. Her dual engagement with performance and composition informs her understanding of what young pianists need to develop musicality alongside technical skill.

Why we love this

Firefly captures genuine early elementary pedagogy. Massoud writes with authentic understanding of what beginning pianists can execute and enjoy, avoiding the oversimplification that makes early pieces forgettable. The piece works equally well as a recital piece or as an engaging study that students actually want to practice.

What to expect

The piece evokes the gentle, fleeting quality of fireflies on a summer evening, with luminous quality that emerges from simple melodic materials. Light and graceful, Firefly invites young players to discover how phrasing and tone color create atmosphere rather than relying on complexity.

Who it's for

Beginning pianists in their first or second year of study will find Firefly accessible yet musically rewarding. Teachers seeking repertoire that balances technical appropriateness with genuine artistic expression appreciate Massoud's writing for this level.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melodic line with gentle dynamic swells to suggest the firefly's flickering movement rather than playing mechanically from note to note.
  • Pay attention to hand position and finger independence in any repeated patterns, using them as an opportunity to build consistent touch across the hand.
  • Experiment with subtle tempo flexibility in transitions to create breathing space between musical ideas, especially if the piece contains distinct sections.

How to use it

Firefly works beautifully in a recital program where it can provide a moment of quiet reflection between more energetic pieces. It also serves as strong repertoire to demonstrate student progress at a studio recital or festival, giving early elementary students a piece with genuine artistic appeal.

Skills your students will build

  • Legato and staccato articulation contrast
  • Phrase shaping with dynamic sensitivity
  • Consistent finger action in repeated patterns
  • Awareness of musical imagery and its translation to the keyboard
